Beyond the horizon: life and work on an offshore platform

Imagine being out at sea.

No coastline, no landmarks – just water stretching endlessly in every direction.

And then, rising from the horizon, a structure of steel and light.

At first, it seems almost unreal. Until you realise: this is where people live, work and rely on each other – every single day.

Welcome to working offshore.

More than steel: a city built on the sea

Offshore platforms are not just industrial facilities – they are fully functioning ecosystems. Designed to extract oil and gas from deep beneath the seabed, they combine engineering, logistics and living space in one of the most extreme environments imaginable.

The Johan Sverdrup platform in the North Sea is one of the most advanced of its kind. A key energy hub for Norway and one of Europe’s largest offshore developments, it stands for scale, precision and efficiency.

And right in the middle of it: KAEFER.

Keeping it running: KAEFER’s role offshore

On Johan Sverdrup, KAEFER delivers the full ISO scope: insulation, scaffolding, surface treatment, and interior works.

Around 30 specialists rotate on site, ensuring that everything runs smoothly under conditions that are anything but predictable. Strong winds, limited access and tight schedules are part of the daily reality.

Two stories, one platform

There are many people working on the platform, each with different roles and backgrounds.

For Julian, this was his first time offshore. As part of KAEFER’s Management Trainee Programme in Norway, he joined the platform to support the rollout of digital tools – helping foremen register hours directly in iCore, KAEFER’s digital system for time recording and reporting and understand how it connects to DPMS, KAEFER’s order to invoice solution, while working closely with the teams on site.

For Arne, offshore is routine. With around 25 years of experience, he is the KAEFER Site Manager – coordinating teams, aligning with the client and managing operations in a demanding environment.

Different perspectives.

One shared reality.

Arrival: where it all begins

Before you even set foot on an offshore platform, preparation is key.

A three-day helicopter safety training, emergency simulations – including underwater escape scenarios – and multiple safety courses are mandatory. Every movement, every reaction is trained.

Only after all preparations are completed the journey really begins.

The helicopter approaches. The platform grows larger with every second.
What seemed small from a distance suddenly reveals its true scale. And suddenly, you’re standing on a helideck high above the sea, with strong winds around you and nothing but water below.

A “first time moment” you don’t forget.

“The helicopter journey and especially the landing on the platform was the biggest “wow moment” for me.” – Julian

A day offshore: structured, intense, precise

The workday starts early.

06:00 – wake-up

07:00 – morning meeting

From there, everything follows a clear structure.

Julian moves between different areas, supporting foremen, solving practical challenges and helping integrate digital tools into daily workflows – ensuring that hour registration, progress tracking and project data flow seamlessly through systems like iCore and DPMS.

Arne focuses on coordination – aligning teams, managing priorities and ensuring that operations run smoothly despite constant changes.

The environment is intense: noise, movement, heavy equipment.

“There is a lot of noise and constant sound. The weather changes quickly. Distances are large. There are vibrations and a lot of heavy equipment being handled. There is a strong HSE culture. There is always time to work safely.” – Arne

Nothing is left to chance: safety offshore

With such a demanding environment, nothing is left to chance. Safety is not just a priority – it is part of every single step.

As mentioned, it starts long before arriving on the platform, but it doesn’t stop there.

Safety continues to guide everything:

Whether it’s strong winds, heavy lifting or complex operations – every decision is made with safety in mind. Because offshore, safety isn’t something you think about occasionally. It’s something that shapes every action, every movement, every day. Or as it’s often said: There is always time to work safely.

“We prioritise what is most important. You have to adapt quickly and help as much as possible. Planning is the key to making things work well. There is always time to maintain a strong HSE culture.” – Arne

Digital support: keeping operations connected

But it’s not just safety that keeps everything running. In an environment this complex, staying organised and connected is just as important. Behind the scenes, digital tools play a key role in keeping operations efficient and transparent.

With iCore, foremen can register working hours directly throughout the day – replacing manual processes and enabling more accurate and up-to-date reporting.

This data feeds into DPMS, which covers the full order-to-invoice process: from planning and estimation to progress tracking, quality control and reporting.

Together, these tools help the teams offshore to stay aligned, make better decisions and keep complex projects on track – even in an environment where conditions change constantly.

But even with the right systems in place, offshore life is not defined by processes alone.

Because once the workday ends, it’s not dashboards or data that shape the experience – it’s the people, the environment and the way life continues beyond the job.

When work becomes home

After a full day of work in the middle of the North Sea, the KAEFER employees don’t simply return home to their families and friends. Instead, they remain on the platform, which becomes their home for weeks at a time.

The cabins where they live are compact and functional, designed with efficiency in mind. A bed, a desk, storage – everything has its place. Nothing is excessive, but everything you need is there.

Just a few steps beyond their cabins, the platform offers much more: spacious dining areas where everyone comes together, lounges inviting you to unwind after a long day, a gym, a cinema room- even quiet corners to simply sit and talk.

This combination often surprises newcomers: a highly industrial workplace on one side and a thoughtfully designed living environment on the other. It’s a contrast that doesn’t just make offshore life possible, but sustainable. And these communal spaces are well used, fostering connection and support.

Life on a platform: a different kind of togetherness

A question that often comes up: What happens when you can’t go home? Doesn’t it get lonely?

The answer is surprisingly simple: not really. Because offshore life creates something different. A kind of team spirit that is hard to replicate anywhere else. You spend your entire day together – and your evenings too.

Whether watching football matches, playing bingo or quizzes, or just sitting together after a long shift, it’s not about big events. It’s about shared time.

And over time, that creates a strong sense of belonging – almost like being part of a small, floating community.

“It felt like there is a very strong team spirit offshore. Already on the first day, one of the foremen invited me to watch a football match after work.” – Julian

Beyond the horizon: More than just a job

Life and work on an offshore platform are unlike anything else. It’s a unique blend of challenge and teamwork, precision and perseverance. For those who live it, the platform is more than a workplace – it becomes a community and a home away from home.

As the days pass and the sea stretches endlessly around them, the KAEFER Team relies on each other, finding strength in their shared experience and commitment.

This is offshore life: demanding, different, and an experience you will never forget.

For Julian, this first time offshore was more than just a new workplace – it was a completely new perspective on how KAEFER’s work comes together in practice.

“This first trip offshore has been an incredible experience that I won’t soon forget. It has given me a completely new perspective on how our work comes together in practice – from people to processes. Seeing how DPMS and iCore support daily operations and strengthen project follow-up has been a real success story to be part of. It’s been a very positive first experience offshore, and it feels like just the beginning – with more to come.” – Julian
