Located in the vibrant Map Ta Phut industrial area of Rayong, the BLCP power plant is an energy colossus. With a capacity of 1,434 megawatts, it is a local milestone in power generation.
Our journey with BLCP began in October when KAEFER was awarded a major turnaround contract in Thailand involving 55,000 m3 of scaffolding and 2,500 m2 of insulation work. The schedule for the project was unexpectedly pushed forward into the New Year holidays, but our KAEFER team responded quickly, mobilising over 100 skilled workers in record time. The original plan was to use our own scaffolding, however the rescheduling of the job meant this was no longer possible. This meant that we had to adapt quickly and source rented equipment to meet the needs of the project.
The execution phase presented a mosaic of challenges. From erecting scaffolding at dizzying heights of up to 70 metres to managing additional work areas. The work involved some 570 scaffolding points and 360 insulation points at various locations and heights throughout the site.
Such a logistical complexity – moving materials quickly and safely to hundreds of locations on time – was immense and required a proactive approach as well as meticulous planning to ensure a seamless process. To achieve this, the KAEFER team carried out detailed site surveys and oversaw timely mobilisation of materials and efficient site management. This underlines the professionalism and expertise of our Thai KAEFER team, together with our high safety awareness and the fact that we had no incidents.
A major highlight was completing 50% of the project scope before the start of the turnaround. Khun Eakkasit, our local Site Manager, played a key role in this achievement. His leadership in coordinating operations, client relations and the workforce – especially during the New Year holidays – was critical. An additional focus on the wellbeing of our employees contributed to this success.
When asked about the project, KAEFER Thailand Managing Director Afzal Khan says: “This project was more than just a job; it was a demonstration of KAEFER’s ability to handle complex tasks reliably and professionally. The additional scope in terms of insulation and scaffolding required extra manpower and resources, but it also demonstrated our client’s confidence in us. Our success on the BLCP turnaround project has not only strengthened our reputation in the industry, but also cemented our position in supporting our clients to extend the lifespan of their assets.”
